Maneka Gandhi at All India Women Journalists’ Workshop talks about malnutrition

She began her keynote address by sharing her vision of Empowered women contributing as equal partners and well nurtured children with full opportunities for growth and development.

New Delhi, Nov 21 Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Monday said that the key focus of her ministry was to reduce malnutrition.

She began her keynote address by sharing her vision of Empowered women contributing as equal partners and well nurtured children with full opportunities for growth and development in a safe and protective environment. She also mentioned that there has been colossal improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth witnessed in 58 out of 100 gender-critical districts.

Maneka Gandhi on Mahila Police Volunteers:

"We need your support to nominate and write about women, who can become Mahila Police Volunteers (MPVs). MPVs will act as a role model for the community and be an example of empowered woman by her own conduct. I want you to find role models to show how women do amazing things and who deserve National recognition."

Maneka Gandhi on National Children's Fund:

"We have started National Children's Fund promote excellence and betterment of children. It will provide Scholarships to children residing in Child Care Institutions for higher education. Assistance to children in Child Care Institutions to undertake innovative activities through National Children's Fund."

Maneka Gandhi on focusing on malnutrition:

"We have created a Real Time Monitoring system for ICDS to keep a tab on Growth Charts of children. The ICDS Common App Software drills down feature for nutritional and operational indicators. We have brought about comprehensive regulations on micronutrient fortification to end malnutrition. We are reviving the use of millets across #ICDS project to quadruple nutrition intake among children. We have established food testing laboratories to test the quality of food provided under ICDS. One Central Laboratory at Faridabad and three Regional Laboratories in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata."

Maneka Gandhi on adoption:

"Continuous monitoring of CARINGS, a web based management information on adoption. 33 special outreach programmes conducted covering around 3,000 stakeholders to popularise the #adoption guidelines. We have made special provisions to address heinous offences committed by children above 16 years. Juvenile Justice Act 2015 will streamline adoption procedures for orphan, abandoned and surrendered children. Come forward and motivate people to participate in Foster Care of children in need. Juvenile Justice ACT 2015 ensures detailed rehabilitation and social re-integration measures as sponsorship and foster care. Model Guidelines for foster care, 2016 formulated by Central Government and placed in public domain on 11th November, 2016. Foster Family is selected, approved and supervised by Child Welfare Committee (CWC)."

Maneka Gandhi on women safety:

"We are aggressively taking up Women Safety issues by taking significant strides. First National Policy for Women was formulated in 2001 seeking concerted efforts from several ministries to make it successful. Adopting rights-based approach instead of projecting women as recipients of welfare benefits. We need gender responsive approach across all sectors. Let women enjoy de jure and de facto fundamental rights and realize their full potential. Our policy focus is Gender sensitive infrastructure and facilities for safety of women and girls."

Maneka Gandhi to women journalists:

"It is worth it for me if I turn you into activists to catapult our objectives of Women Safety and nutrition for children."

The minister also held a question and answer session with the journalists on issues like child abuse, discrimination against women in various fields especially employment, financial empowerment of women, nutrition, malfunctioning of anganwadis in several states etc.

Minister concluded by seeking collaboration of women journalists in her ministry's endeavours.

The first 'All India Women Journalists' Workshop' was held in June this year.
