Man, mother held for his wife's death

Jamshedpur, Sept 18: A man and his mother were today arrested on charges of setting his wife on fire for dowry last week in Thatupada village under Seraikela police station of Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said.

Kalicharan Nayak and his mother Leela Nayak were arrested for setting afire Mamta Kumari (24) for failing to meet their demands of dowry, said Superintendent of Police, Indrajeet Mahatha.

Search is on to apprehend Kalicharan's sister Manju Nayak, who is at large. Mamta's father Chatish Chandra Bhag, a resident of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, lodged an FIR accusing the three of her daughter's death.

The victim was subjected to frequent torture for dowry ever since Kalicharan married her four years ago, he said. Mamta was set ablaze by the accused on September 15 and she died in M G M Hospital here the next day. Both the arrested persons have been remanded to judicial custody.
