The lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz posted a letter from the police confirming that no request to extradite Zakir Naik has been made by India as yet. He appended the July 13 letter from the Royal Malaysia Police's Legal Affairs Department on his Facebook page.

"For your information, this department has checked and found no such request made by the Indian government towards your client up to date," the statement read.

"We urge you to check with the Attorney General's Chambers on this matter too."

It had been reported earlier that the Indian government had sent an official request to Malaysia on January 2018. This was also confirmed by the Ministry for External Affairs.

Zakir Naik, against whom scores of cases have been filed in India had fled to Malaysia. He had been granted Permanent Resident Status. On July 6, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir Mohammad had said that Zakir Naik could stay in the country as long as he did not create any problems.
