Mahesh Babu to adopt village in Telangana's Mahabubnagar


Hyderabad, Aug 20: Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu, who had earlier announced to adopt Burripalem village, his father's birth place, in Andhra Pradesh, has said he would also adopt a village in the backward Mahabubnagar district of Telangana.

In response to a suggestion made by Telangana's Information Technology and Panchayati Raj Minister K T Rama Rao, who appreciated Mahesh Babu's recently released film "Srimanthudu", the actor made this announcement on Twitter.

"Very Humbled after receiving a congratulatory call on the success of Srimanthudu from Minister PR&RD @KTRTRS. He suggested I adopt a village from the most backward district of Mahbubnagar as part of their #GramaJyothi initiative. I said YES, more details to be announced soon..," Mahesh Babu tweeted.

In the recently released action-drama "Srimanthudu", the actor played the role of Harsha, who adopts a village to look after the welfare of people living in rural areas.

Also starring Shruti Haasan, the film follows the life of a young billionaire who adopts a village.

Mahesh Babu had earlier announced to adopt his ancestral village Burripalem under Tenali rural mandal in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district.

The village is the native place of Mahesh's father - actor Krishna. The 'Grama Jyothi' programme aims to empower gram panchayats.

The programme introduces a participatory approach in preparing village development plans involving the panchayats, self-help groups, people and all interested in the holistic development of the village.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had on August 17 launched the 'Grama Jyothi' programme at Gangadevipalli village near Warangal.
