The demand by the Goa government to extend the tenure of the Mahadayi tribunal has been rejected by Karnataka. At a high level meeting presided over by Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, it was decided to oppose a move by Goa which sought extension of the tribunal's tenure beyond August 2018 as was originally envisaged.

The decision was taken in a bid to address the problem of lack of drinking water. The dispute needs to be resolved at the earliest, the CM said following a meeting with floor leaders.

The tribunal was set up in November 2010 with a mandate of providing a report on the dispute in three years. The term can be extended only twice. The tenure has already been extended twice and any further extension would need a legal amendment. Any further extension would only lead to delay in the implementation of projects to provide drinking water, Karantaka has contended.
