Macchil encounter: Lifers of 5 Army personnel suspended by Tribunal
An investigation was conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir police following which it was found that the encounter was fake.
The life sentence awarded to five Army personnel has been suspended by the Armed Forces Tribunal. Five personnel including a Colonel and Captain were sentenced to life by a General Court Martial in 2014 after they were found guilty of staging the killing of three Kashmiri civilians at Macchil in 2010.
It was alleged that Sajjad Khan, Riyaz Lone and Shafi Lone of Nadihal village were lured into an Army camp and subsequently killed in a staged encounter. Following the encounter they were branded as foreign militants.
An investigation was conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir police following which it was found that the encounter was fake. Following this the Army launched court martial proceedings in December 2013. They were then sentenced to life and incidentally this was the first such case in which lifers were awarded in Kashmir.
