New Delhi, Jun 26: Counting of votes for three Lok Sabha seats Azamgarh and Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, and Sangrur in Punjab and seven assembly seats Rajinder Nagar in Delhi, Mandar in Jharkhand, Atmakur in Andhra Pradesh and Agartala, Town Bordowali, Surma and Jabarajnagar in Tripura began amid high security on Sunday.

Polling was by and large peaceful in the bypolls for three Lok Sabha and seven assembly seats spread across five states and Delhi on Thursday barring an incident of stabbing of a policeman in Tripura.

At least 19 people including Tripura PCC chief Birajit Sinha were injured in a clash between Congress and BJP supporters in front of Congress Bhavan here on Sunday. Police fired tear gas to disperse the mob, which clashed after the results of the by-elections for four assembly seats were declared.

SAD (Amritsar)'s Simranjit Singh Mann on Sunday won the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat after defeating his nearest rival, AAP's Gurmail Singh, by a margin of 5,822 votes. Mann polled 2,53,154 votes, while Singh secured 2,47,332 votes, as per the data available.

A low turnout of 45.30 per cent was recorded in the bypolls to Punjab's Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, state Chief Electoral Officer S Karuna Raju said. Voting was held on Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm, and until late evening, the provisional figures stood at 37.01 per cent.

Altogether 61.25 per cent of about 3.5 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the by-election to the Mandar assembly seat in Jharkhand's Ranchi district on Thursday, an election official said. In 2019, the overall polling percentage in the constituency was 67.88 per cent.

The polling process was largely peaceful, barring a few sporadic incidents, including the stabbing of off-duty police constable Samir Saha in Kunjaban area in Agartala constituency, he said.

Nearly 67 per cent of the 2.11 lakh voters exercised their franchise on Thursday in the by-election to Atmakuru Assembly constituency in Andhra Pradesh. State Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena told PTI here that the polling was conducted peacefully in all 279 polling stations in the constituency.
