Krishna Water row: Telangana wants reduction in allocation to Andhra Pradesh

As both the Telugu states are already in a spat over Krishna water issue, the Telangana government heats up the issue again by raising the outside basin and in-basin projects issue.

Hyderabad, April 18: The Telangana government on Monday submitted its final arguments before the Brajesh Mishra-led Krishna River Water Dispute Tribunal-II. In its final arguments, the state government demanded the tribunal to reconsider and reduce the allocation of Krishna water to Andhra Pradesh. The Telangana government also said that Andhra is diverting the Godavari water for its various projects like Polavaram and Pattiseema.

Telangana's demands in its final arguments might rake up the issue again with the Andhra Pradesh government.

Telangana, for the first time, has raised the issue of outside basin and in-basin argument and said that the requirements of projects outside basin might be considered only after the in-basin projects are served with 75 per cent dependable waters and added that for allocation of water over and 75 per cent dependable flows priority might be given to the in-basin projects. It had stated that most Krishna Water used by the Andhra government was received by Telangana. The argument also stated that the projects were taken up the Andhra government fall outside the basin areas and the projects from Telangana fall inside the basin areas.

The state government demanded that there should be limits in the diversion of water from Pothireddypadu head regulator to the extent of 1,5000 cusecs and added that the government is intended in providing drinking water to Chennai. The Telangana members also demanded to revise the allocation of water to the Telugu Ganga project, Rajolibanda diversion scheme and reallocation to in-basin projects.

The demands proposed by the Telangana government in it final arguments might rake up the water war between the states as the both are already fighting for control of Srisailam and Nagarjuna reservoirs on Krishna river.

The Telangana government wants to have information on utilisation of water for all the projects in Andhra, especially on the Krishna Delta system like Nagarjuna, Srisailam, Kurnool and Cuddapah canal serving outside the basin and to allocate water within the basin.

On the other hand, The Andhra Pradesh government had also submitted its final arguments on Monday where it demanded project-wise allocation to projects listed in KWDT-I award and added that the project projected in the 11th schedule of the AP Reorganisation Act and those permitted by KWDT-II award.
