Kolhapur rural youths to get jobs
Mumbai, March 9: Over 1000 rural youths in western Maharashtra's Kolhapur district are expected to get jobs this year under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission project being implemented by the Zilla Parishad there.

After help with training and placement, each youth will earn between Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per annum, Kolhapur Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Dr Vijay Suryawanshi told PTI.

Skill and knowledge enhancement are the driving forces of economic growth and social development in the district, the senior bureaucrat said, adding these factors have become even more important given the increasing pace of globalisation.

The Central government established the National Rural Livelihoods Mission to implement the new strategy of poverty alleviation woven around community-based institutions, he said.

The Mission's primary objective is to reduce poverty by promoting diversified and gainful self-employment and wage employment opportunities for sustainable increase in incomes. It provides a combination of financial resource and technical assistance to states such that they could use the comprehensive livelihoods approach encompassing inter-related tasks like "innovation activity" where the goal is poverty alleviation in a BPL family.

"Under the skilling and placement programme, short-term placement linked, market driven training is provided for between one to three months to rural poor youth between the age of 18-35. Trained youth are assured of a job after skilling, Suryawanshi said.
