UID for dogs? Kerala govt to give Unique Identity Number to pets

New Delhi, Nov 4: You may not believe this but it is true. The Kerala Government has decided to provide Unique Identification Number to all the pets, especially dogs in the State.

Reportedly the step is being taken amid reports that people abandon dogs on the streets. By providing UID to pets, the State will maintain a complete information registry of them.

UID for dogs in Kerela?

M.G. Rajamanickam, district collector and stand-in mayor of the Kochi was quoted by the Hindu as saying, "The scheme will help curb the practice of abandoning dogs on the streets, identified to be one of the major reasons for the exponential growth of stray dogs in the city".

To provide UID, all the pets will be embedded with a microchip under their skin. The 14-digit number chip will be administered through an injection to the pets. The microchip will be of the the size of a large rice grain.

This will help the officials in maintaining complete records of the dogs. Through the microchip, dogs' age their vaccination details, owner's name and address can be easily traced out.

Reportedly, the Kochi city has around 7000 to 10,000 stray dogs. Officials say that out of these, 40 per cent pets were abandoned for various reasons.
