Kerala: Water level in Idukki dam further reduces to 2397.94 feet

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 13: The water level in Kerala's Idukki dam further decreased on Monday and now stands at 2397.94 feet even as parts of Ernakulam and Thrissur districts still remain submerged. The Full Reservoir Level of the dam is 2403 feet.

Even as the water level of the dam was now below the 2,400 feet mark, district authorities said that the decision to close down the five floodgates will be taken at a later date depending on the amount of rains.

The toll has risen to 29, while at least four people were missing. Idukki and Wayanad districts, where heavy rains continued for the second day and showed no signs of stopping, were put on high alert. So was Ernakulam district as the released dam water is expected to reach Aluva on Kochi's outskirts by Friday night.

The state disaster management authority has announced a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Wayanad district till August 14, in Idukki till August 13 and in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode till August 11.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the various district authorities, described the situation as "very grim".
