Kerala terror camp: NIA to drop charges against 2 persons

Idukki(Kerala), Oct 16: Two persons accused of attending a terror training camp in Kerala will walk scot free after the National Investigation Agency decided to drop charges against them.

Abu Saad and Shah Alam, residents of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh were accused of attending a terror training camp in Wagamon, Kerala in the year 2007.

The NIA which took over the case had said that this camp which was organized by the radical faction of the SIMI headed by Safdar Nagori had planned a series of attacks in India.

It was alleged that Saad and Alam were part of a team of 14 from Azamgarh which attended the camp. However now the NIA has found no evidence against the duo.

Sanction to drop charges sought

The NIA has written to the Home Ministry seeking sanction to drop charges against the duo.

The NIA has stated that during the course of the investigation no evidence was found against the two persons. The NIA also stated that they also found that the two persons had not attended the camp.

If the home ministry accords sanction to drop the charges against the two persons, then they would be absolved of all the charges.

Once the sanction is granted then the matter would be placed before the court and the NIA would inform that they are not pressing charges.

What is the Wagamon case?

The Wagamon camp case is related to a programme held by the radical faction of the SIMI in Wagamon in Kerala. It was alleged that several activists of the outfit headed by Safdar Nagori had taken part in this camp in the year 2007.

This camp was an attempt to lift the sagging morale of the SIMI which had been banned by the Union Government.

As part of this plan, the members were supposed to carry out a series of attacks across the country. Many would also term this camp as an crucial event since it also led to the birth of the Indian Mujahideen.

The NIA has had a difficult time investigating this case. When it was found that 14 persons from Azamgarh had taken part in this camp, a team of the NIA visited the place to investigate and also carry out arrests.

However the NIA was accused of a witch hunt and were received by a hostile public who prevented the officials from investigating or carrying out any arrests in Azamgarh.
