Kerala: Minors in orphanage raped, five arrested
The Wayanad police arrested five persons for allegedly raping seven minors in an orphanage in Kerala over a period of two months. The incident came to light when one of the girls was seen exiting a shop near the orphanage under suspicious circumstances. On questioning, it was learnt that the girls between the age of 14 and 15 were being subjected to sexual abuse at least since January.
The orphanage authorities were informed and they alerted the police after which cases were filed against six persons. Police officials claimed that the accused lured the victims who are inmates of a minority orphanage, to a shop nearby and sexually abused them. The girls also alleged that they were threatened by the accused. Out of the six accused, the police have arrested five persons. Hunt for another is on.
The accused are said to have lured the girls while they were returning to the orphanage on multiple occasions. The police suspect that more girls were abused but only seven have come forward to give statements so far.
The incident comes amid anger over the rape of a 16-year-old girl by a catholic priest in Kerala. All seven minor victims have given their statement to the police. Counselling sessions have been arranged for the girls.
