Kerala: Minor sisters who committed suicide were sexually assaulted, filmed
It was twice the tragedy for a family in Walayar in Palakkad after a 9-year-old committed suicide within 52 days of her elder sister killing herself. The police claimed that the post mortem report confirmed sexual assault on both minors.
A 9-year-old minor was found hanging dead inside her house in Palakkad on Saturday, less than two months after her 11-year-old sister had allegedly committed suicide. The police apprehended four persons in connection with the two deaths on Tuesday. Investigating authorities also found visuals of one of the girls being assaulted in a phone belonging to the accused. What came as a shocker was one of the accused being a cousin of the deceased girls'.
Mother of the victims alleged negligence on part of the investigating authorities when her elder daughter committed suicide in January. Had the case been probed properly, she claimed, her younger daughter would not have had to kill herself.
The victims' mother told media persons on Tuesday that she had reprimanded her relative for sexually harassing her daughter earlier and the police had been informed of the same but no action had been initiated. She held the lackadaisical attitude of investigative authorities responsible for the death of her younger daughter who could have been saved had action been taken against the perpetrators.
A probe is likely to be initiated against the local police for failing to acknowledge the seriousness of the matter. The Walayar Child welfare committee is expected to be taken to task over negligence.
