Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is set to host an Iftar Party this evening (June 8) for which the state exchequer may have to shell out a whopping Rs 66 crore. The Telangana CM has drawn flak from all quarters for throwing such an expensive party with the Congress saying that "KCR is deceiving people".

Some social activists have reportedly approached the Hyderabad High Court over KCR's grand party which many see as a move to woo the minorities. The activists said in a statement said that the Telangana government is politicising the issue.

"Iftar is a personal affair of a Muslim, and the government is politicising it. If the government wants to show that it cares about minorities and communal harmony, then all ration card holders who are Below Poverty Line can be given dry fruits through the Public Distribution System," reports quoted a statement by the activists as saying.

The social activists also argue that as money for Iftar dinners is drawn from funds from the minorities welfare department, hosting such "lavish" dinners would rob the poor members of minority communities of welfare schemes

Telanagan Congress lashed out at KCR and asked what was the need for such suandering when farmers in the state were committing suicide.

"KCR government is deceiving people. There's no need for such a gathering when farmers are committing suicide. The CM has already spent crores to build a home for himself. This is not required," reports quoted Madhu Goud Yaskhi of the Telangana Congress as saying.

Arrangements are being to accomodate over 7,000 people at the party which would be attended by KCR and other ministers of his government. K Chandrashekhar Rao has been hosting iftar parties since 2015, spending crores of rupees, said reports.

On Wednesday, President Ram Nath Kovind had cancelled the celebration of Iftaar party at Rashtrapati Bhawan which used be a tradition followed by many of his predecessors
