The new rates were announced after representatives of private hospitals on May 1, 2021, met the Karnataka CM and appealed to him to enhance the package rates of treatment in each category taking into account the increasing costs in recruiting manpower and consumables costs.

On May 5, Karnataka registered the single largest day spike of COVID-19 cases and fatalities since the outbreak of the pandemic last year. The state logged 50,112 fresh coronavirus cases and 346 deaths.
