Bengaluru, May 10: For the uninitiated ILU stands for "I love you". The abbreviated version of the oft-repeated human expression got prominence in the Indian lexicon because of the popular Bollywood song, ILU- ILU, from the hit film, Saudagar, released in 1991.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Wednesday during his campaign in poll-bound Karnataka used the abbreviated version "ILU" twice to allege that some kind of "secret pact" is underway between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)).

"Do you know about ILU-ILU. It's the Congress and the JD(S). The Congress is anyway going to be defeated, and votes given to the JD(S) will also go wasted. They are not even in the race," Shah said during his roadshow in Bengaluru.

"The Congress and the JD(S) are supporting each other. This just shows their desperation to win the elections. People are going to vote for the BJP on May 12 and the Congress is going to lose," he added.

It is not for the first time that the BJP has alleged some kind of understanding between the Congress and the JD(S). The Congress, on its part, has also alleged that the BJP and the JD(S) are having a secret pact before the polls. The JD(S) has denied allegations of both the BJP and the Congress.

The HD Deve Gowda-led party maintains that it will emerge as the winner on its own. Experts say the JD(S) will be the "kingmaker" after the elections, as neither the BJP nor the incumbent Congress will reach the magic figure of 113 seats to form the next government in the southern state. Thus, the party with the maximum seats has to join hands with the JD(S) which is likely to get 30 to 40 seats.

A few days ago, on the first day of his ongoing campaign in Karnataka on May 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi heaped praises on former PM and JD(S) patriarch Deve Gowda. In fact, it was Congress president Rahul Gandhi who a few months ago stated that the BJP and the JD(S) are having a "secret alliance". Recently, again Rahul asked the JD(S) to tell which party (the BJP or the Congress) it is going to support after the polls.

JD(S) Karnataka president and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said recently that the party will support any party which will fulfill its manifesto. Although Modi and Shah are profusely praising Deve Gowda, both in their rallies are asking voters not to vote for the JD(S).

The Assembly elections in Karnataka are scheduled on Saturday (May 12). A total of 224 seats are up for grabs in the highly-contested elections, dubbed as a curtain raiser before the 2019 General Elections. The results of the polls will be declared on May 15.
