Karnataka cabinet expansion updates: 29 Ministers inducted into Basavaraj Bommai's cabinet

Bengaluru, Aug 04: A week after taking over as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday expanded his new cabinet, by inducting 29 Ministers. The new Ministers were administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at the Raj Bhavan here.

Bommai has by and large gone with old faces, as 23 of them were Ministers in the previous B S Yediyurappa cabinet, while six are new.

The new council of ministers led by Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai took oath at the Raj Bhavan today. Bommai was appointed CM after B S Yediyurappa resigned from the post. In all 29 ministers including the CM took oath today. While several new faces were included many others were dropped from the council of ministers.

No DCMs, no Vijayendra
One prominent name that would not find a place in the new Cabinet of Karnataka Chief Minister, B S Bommai would be that of B S Vijayendra, son of former CM, B S Yediyurappa. The new Cabinet would be a mix of youth and experience, Bommai said, while also adding that there would be no deputy Chief Ministers. Among the 29 ministers, 8 are from the Lingayat community, seven Vokkaligas, seven OBCs, three SCs, one ST and one from the Reddy community. One minister would be a woman.

"Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national president JP Nadda, in order to give pro-people administration and face the challenge of the next Assembly elections, this Cabinet is formed," Bommai said. Bommai said that on the demand to include Vijayendra into the Cabinet, BJP chief, J P Nadda had a word with Yediyurappa.

On July 30, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his two-day visit to the national capital earlier, he also met several Union ministers, including home minister Amit Shah and defence minister Rajnath Singh, among others.

Basavaraj Bommai, who took his own oath as the 23rd chief minister of Karnataka on July 28, arrived in Delhi on August 2 to discuss the plans for the state cabinet expansion with the BJP national president JP Nadda.

"Cabinet expansion will take place tomorrow," Bommai was quoted as saying by news agency ANI while the chief minister was speaking to reporters in Delhi. "If I get the clearance from the Central party leadership tomorrow morning, the oath-taking ceremony will be held in the evening."
