Karnataka Bandh: Stay indoors, advise police; normal life will be badly hit


The September 9 Karnataka bandh over the Cauvery waters issue will be total. All private schools will remain closed on Friday. Public transport will stay off the roads. Moreover, Tamil entertainment channels will not be broadcast on the bandh day.

In the event of the film industry supporting the bandh call, no new movies will be released tomorrow. The release of new Kannada movies has been pushed to Saturday.

People have been advised to avoid traveling on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway. All vehicular movement towards Hosur, too, will be stopped on Friday as a total lockdown is expected. All taxis and auto rickshaws will stay off the road in the entire state.

While private institutions will remain shut, there is no official word as yet on the government schools and colleges. In Mandya both private and government schools will remain shut tomorrow. The state intelligence report states that the bandh will be total.

However, normal life will not be hit as hard in the Northern part of Karnataka. The police have increased security and the rapid action force is guarding the Vidhan Soudha.

In Mandya, the protests continued on Thursday for the third day. The deployment of security is high and will be increased on Friday, the police say. Protests have been staged at Ramanagara, Mysuru, Srirangapatna as well.

Karnataka will move the Supreme Court seeking modification of the order which had directed the state to release 15,000 cusecs of water for 10 days. The matter will be heard on Monday.

Karnataka's Chief Secretary has written to the Centre seeking to send an expert team to both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to analyse and review the ground level situation in the Cauvery basin.
