Kamala Mills fire: Mojo's Bistro owner Yug Tulli surrenders before Mumbai Police, claims innocence

The co-owner of Mojo's Bistro, where 14 people died on December 29 during the fire at Mumbai's Kamala Mills compound, has been arrested. He surrendered at the NM Joshi Marg Police Station early this morning.

Yug Tuli had been absconding ever since the incident. Police had, on Thursday, claimed that Tuli was spotted at Hyderabad airport but could not fly out. By the time, the police reached the spot he had disappeared.

A sessions court last Friday had rejected his anticipatory bail application. Seeking pre-arrest bail for his client, Tulli's lawyer had contended that the devastating fire at the Kamala Mills compound had started from the adjoining 1 Above pub. Hence, the owners of Mojo's Bistro could not be blamed for the tragedy, he argued.

Recently, Jigar Sanghvi and Kripesh Sanghvi, '1 Above' pub co-owners wanted in connection with the December 29 Kamala Mills fire that claimed 14 lives, were arrested.

Tuli's partner in Mojo's Yug Pathak, son of retired Director General of Police and former Commissioner of Police (Pune) KK Pathak, was arrested in the first week of January.

On December 29, a fire had swept through 1Above and adjacent Mojo's Bistro resto-pub in Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai, resulting in the death of 14 people.

The arrest came just a day after hotelier Vishal Kariya was arrested for sheltering the three accused at his suburban residence in Juhu.

Meanwhile, the Bombay high court (HC) on Monday fixed February 12 as the next date of hearing the plea filed by former Mumbai Police Commissioner Julio Ribeiro, seeking a judicial inquiry into Kamala Mills Fire incident that claimed 14 lives.

While hearing the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) yesterday, the HC pulled up the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the fire department for failing to ensure that restaurants and pubs follow fire safety norms.

"It is time the BMC keeps its house in order," a division bench of Justice R.M. Borde and Justice R.G. Ketkar reportedly said.
