Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan on Friday expressed shock at the Supreme Court's verdict on Cauvery River water dispute that reduced Tamil Nadu's share in the disputed waters.

Speaking to reporters, the actor said "the reduction of water allocation to Tamil Nadu is definitely disappointing, but political parties must not see this as an opportunity to get votes."

"I have to get more details about the actual judgement but I think the Supreme Court firmly said that water cannot be owned by any state. That's a consoling factor," he further said.

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered that Karnataka would get an additional 14.75 tmcft of Cauvery water. In what is seen as a setback for Tamil Nadu, the court while delivering the Cauvery waters verdict said that Karnataka will provide 177.2 TMC water to Tamil Nadu.

The parties to the dispute were the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, who challenged the 2007 order of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal (CWDT) on the sharing of Cauvery, the Ganga of southern India.

The long-awaited judgement was pronounced by a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar, which had on September 20 last year reserved the verdict on the appeals filed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala against the 2007 award of the tribunal.
