Dharwad, Sept 7: The high profile M M Kalburgi murder case has made little breakthrough and hope of the same is fading by the day. Over a week old, police have little evidence to identify the murderers.

Although sketches have been made, but there is no trace of them. Fearing that the case may have reached a dead end like that of Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare cases, police say,"we haven't been able to conclusively establish whether the assailants spoke in Kannada or Marathi, which could have given a direction to the probe."

A senior official from the CID, which has taken over the case now, meanwhile said that police had ruled out property dispute behind the murder or his tiff with government officials when he headed two literary research institutes.

An intelligence official said that it can be comcluded that this was the work of right-wing fringe elements. However, they have reached a blind spot even there. With no prior intimation or threat calls before the attacks, intelligence departments have not come up with anything significant on right-wing fringe elements after the murder.

Hazy CCTV footage:

The footage which the CID has managed to get from Dharwad is hazy. It shows two persons on a motor cycle fleeing the spot after killing Professor Kalburgi. The footage also suggests that the two men signaled to one person in the car as if to suggest that the job was done.

However, this footage is not good enough as the images are extremely hazy. The bike number is not visible on the footage. The faces of the two men too are not clear which has proved to be a stumbling block for the investigators.

After the murder two persons came under the scanner. However, both had only posted objectionable content on their social media accounts justifying the murder. The police picked up both these persons for questioning only to let them off as nothing concrete was found on them. Both were warned against posting such content.

The State Police and the CBI are now looking forward for the CBI to take it up.

"The CBI has better resources to probe pan India right-wing fringe elements suspected to be at work in the case. The CBI is also probing into the Dhabolkar murder case," a retired intelligence official said.

Writer to return award:

Meanwhile noted writer, Professor, Chandrashekhar Patil has decided to return the prestigious Pampa Award, which was conferred on him in the year 2009. He said that this was being done in protest. The environment that is being created is shocking, he said while adding that it is the least he could do for Prof. Kalburgi a dear friend of his.

The families of Professor Kalburgi, Pansare, Dabholkar have now come together and will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Karnataka. All three persons were killed under similar circumstances and the families have now decided to unite and seek justice. They have however said that they would wait another week to see if the police make any breakthrough in the case before meeting with the Chief Minister.
