Kalburgi Murder: Karnataka Investigators pitching for a CBI probe
Bengaluru, Dec 19: The Karnataka police is making out a case to hand over the investigation into the murder of Dr MM Kalburgi to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In a confidential report that was submitted to the Karnataka Government the Criminal Investigating Department has drawn out various similarities in the murders of Kalburgi and two other rationalists from Maharashtra, Govind Pansare and Narendra Dabholkar.
While it was stated earlier that all three were killed with the same gun, now the CID says that the murders had all taken place in the morning by men on bikes.
While the CID has not said in as many words that a CBI probe is mandated, it does indicate that since this case has an inter-state ramification, it needs to be probed by a centralised agency.
Similarities galore in the three murders:
While speaking about the pattern involved in the killing of all three persons, the CID says in its report that the incidents all took place in the morning.
The CID also notes that in all the three cases, the killers had come on bikes. The early hours of the morning was chosen as security is usually lax at that time.
Further the CID also notes that ballistics confirm that the bullet was fired from a 7.65 mm country made gun. The same or a similar gun was used in all the three cases.
The investigators are however confident that it was the same gun that was used in all three cases. They also claim that the killers belonged to the same outfit which had planned and executed these murders.
While the CID has a lot of scientific details regarding the case, the real identity of the killers has not yet been established.
The sketches that were drawn had led the investigators on a wild goose chase once again proving that the concept of sketching suspects needs to be discontinued due to the poor success rate.
However, the Karnataka government based on the findings by the CID feels that it is a fit case to be handed over to the CBI.
While no decision has been taken, a high level meeting comprising both the Chief Minister and Home Minister of Karnataka would be convened soon to take a final call on whether to hand over the case to the CBI or not.
