Meanwhile, Internet services have been suspended from 2 PM to midnight in view of inflammatory messages related to the Jinnah controversy being widely shared on the social media.

The university is in the centre of a controversy over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah that has been on a wall in the students union's office for decades.

Also, wading into a controversy, Gorakhpur MP Praveen Nishad on Friday said that the Mohammad Ali Jinnah played a role in India's freedom struggle just like Mahatma Gandhi or Jawaharlal Nehru.

It first stirred the controversy after Aligarh BJP MP Satish Gautam asked AMU vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor to explain the reason for Jinnah's portrait being hung on the university campus. On Thursday, chief minister Yogi Adityanath also called for the removal of Jinnah's portrait.
