Jharkhand bandh takes violent turn, 9,000 preventive arrests made

By Vikas

Ranchi, Nov 26: The state-wide bandh call given by an united opposition against the passage of tenancy law amendments in the Jharkhand Assembly took a violent as several vehicles were set ablaze in Dumka district, said reports.

According to reports, several police personnel were injured while trying to prevent a mob from destroying a local market in Sahibganj. Over 9,000 preventive arrests were made in a bid to contain the situation.

Among those taken into custody, include Leader of Opposition Hemant Soren, JVM (P) leader Babulal Marandi and several other leaders belonging to Congress, JD (U). They were, however, released later.

The administration had imposed Section 144 in several parts of the states ahead of the protests.

Opposition leaders criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state over its "dictatorial attitude" in making amendments in the tenancy laws.

The amendments in the law pertain to Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNTA) and Santhal Paragana Tenancy Act (SPTA) - which allow the tribals to make commercial use of their land.
