JD(U) MP Harivansh could be NDA's candidate for Rajya Sabha deputy chairman, say reports
New Delhi, Aug 6: The BJP-led NDA's candidate for the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman could be Janata Dal (United) MP Harivansh, reported news agency ANI while quoting sources.
It was earlier reported that BJP would consider giving the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman to an NDA ally. But, the name of the candidate that was doing rounds then was Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)'s Naresh Gujaral.
The BJP is short of clear majority in the Upper House so it cannot push for its candidate and expect all NDA allies to back him.
While the BJP is the single largest party in the Upper House, it is still short of a clear majority. It would find it hard to get its candidate for the post elected, provided the opposition stands united
According to reports, the opposition is thinking of fielding Trinamool Congress leader Sukehendu Shekhar Roy.
The election to the post of deputy chairman of the Rajya Sabha would be held on Thursday (August 9). Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu announced this in the Upper House on Monday.
The elections became necessary as the term of P J Kurien ended on July 1.
