Jaya mania continues in Tamil Nadu; Nokia-made 'Amma Mobile' to come soon

Tamil Nadu, Oct 21: It is well known fact that 'brand Amma' is a big hit in Tamil Nadu. Be it Amma canteen or Amma cement, the number of welfare measures channelling amma's aura have thousands of fans across the State.

Now, supporters of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa want a mobile phone on her name.

According to reports, the trade union members of Nokia's Sriperumbudur plant want the former Chief Minister to lend a hand to the plant and roll out 'Amma' mobile phones from there.

"We will ask the State Government to take over the plant. They can produce mobile phones of international standards at price points as low as Rs 700 a piece and sell it through PDS shops or give them free," A Soundararajan, president of Nokia India Workers' Union and a CPM MLA from Perumbur in north Chennai was quoted as saying in a Times of India report.

The union members have suggested that the State Government should engage its IT arm ELCOT and devise plans for the takeover of the plant.

Nokia has recently announced suspension of production at its Sriperumbudur plant from November 1.

In the last one and half year, Jaya has introduced the Amma canteen, Amma mineral water, Amma Pharmacy, Amma salt, and Amma cement. Besides this, plans have already been in place to set up Amma Cinemas.

The Amma canteens aimed at selling food at cheaper rates, it also offer tiffin and lunch services, Amma packaged water bottles are sold at Rs 10 per litre, Amma salt in which subsidised salt is available in three varieties: double fortified, refined free flow iodised and low sodium. Also, Amma Pharmacy chain to sell medicines for weaker sections at affordable prices.

Undoubtedly, brand Amma, which has its roots in Jaya's famous wish in 2001 that 'she would like to be a mother to all Tamils', is fastly emerging as the mother of all welfare schemes. Not only the amma scheme provide commodities at cheaper prices but also in good quality.
