New Delhi, Dec 06: Heavy rain pounded the southern part of West Bengal and coastal region of Odisha on Sunday affecting normal life, as cyclone Jawad weakened into a depression.

The depression (remnant of Cyclonic storm Jawad) over northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha coast moved northeastwards and weakened into Well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts at 5.30am. To weaken further into low pressure area during next 6 hours.

“The Depression (remnant of cyclonic storm Jawad) over northwest Bay of Bengal near Odisha coast moved northeastwards with a speed of 25 kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centred at 5.30 pm over northwest Bay of Bengal close to Odisha coast about 30 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha), 120 km east-northeast of Puri (Odisha) and 210 south-southwest of Sagar Island (West Bengal),” the IMD said in its bulletin at 8 pm.

Odisha has encountered 10 cyclones, including the approaching Jawad, in a span of 22 years and the frequency of such natural disasters is on only on the rise, official records of State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) said. Memories of the 1999 super cyclone is still fresh, wind speed of which could not be properly ascertained at the meteorological centre, Bhubaneswar, as the velocity crossed the capacity of the anemometer available then.

State Fisheries Minister Sidiri Appala Raju, who hails from the district, visited the victim’s family in the Palasa hospital and promised all help. The Srikakulam district administration opened 65 relief centres where a few hundred people from vulnerable areas were lodged. The Fisheries Minister visited relief camps in Palasa town and later oversaw the sanitation works. District Collector L Srikesh Balaji visited Santabommali mandal and inspected the relief camps and the food being provided to the accommodated persons. He asked them to be cautious and stay indoors till the storm subsided. Meanwhile, the South Central Railway cancelled more than 60 Express trains on the east coast route on Saturday and Sunday in view of the cyclonic storm.
