Srinagar, Dec 24: Omar Abdullah, who served Jammu and Kashmir for past six years, resigned as the Chief Minister of the state on Wednesday, Dec 24. A day after the assembly election results, Abdullah met Governor NN Vohra and submitted his resignation.

The National Conference (NC) leader became emotional while submitting his resignation. Omar on Wednesday morning tweeted, "6 years ago I drove in to stake my claim to form a government in J&K, now I'm driving in to resign. The wheel comes full circle."

Speaking about his previous experience, Omar said, "6 years ago I was nervous as hell the night before counting, this time I'm strangely calm. What will be will be & I'll be a happy person."

Omar's party won 17 seats, including two independents from Zanskar and Udhampur supported by his party in J&K elections. While speaking to media on his party's stand on formation of government in the state, the former CM said, "the onus of government formation lies primarly on BJP and PDP. We are quitely waiting to watch what happens." [J&K polls: Big humiliation for Omar Abdullah, CM loses in Sonawar, wins Beerwah]

The former CM lost from Sonawar assembly seat to his PDP rival Mohammad Ashraf Mir. However, he won from Beerwah assembly seat by a margin of 1,000 votes after getting a tough fight from his Congress rival Nazir Ahmad Khan.

Omar earlier on Tuesday had hinted at an intriguing possibility of supporting his party National Conference's (NC) bitter political rival PDP in forming a government in the state after the hung verdict in the Assembly polls.

Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's PDP has emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats, 16 short of a majority in the 87-member legislature.
