Kovind said his election for the topmost post shows the greatness of India's Democracy.
President-elect Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday described he election as the 14th President of India as an 'emotional moment'.
In his address after presidential election results were declared, Kovind thanked opposition candidate Meira Kumar and said that he would abide by the Constitution while discharging his duties.
"This is an emotional moment for me today...Would like to thank and congratulate opposition candidate Meira Kumar," he said.
"I want to tell the people that Ram Nath Kovind is going to the Rashtrapati Bhawan as a representative of the poor," he added.
Kovind said his election for the topmost post shows the greatness of India's Democracy.
"Ye zimmedari diya jana desh ke har aise vyakti ke liye sandesh hai jo imaandari ke sath kartavyon ka nirvahan karta hai (This responsibility is a message to all those who discharge their duties with honesty)," he said.

Meira Kumar, on her part, congratulated the President-elect and thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi for having supported her.
"My fight for secularism, the oppressed and the marginalised continues. I thank all my well wishers for their support and good wishes," she said.

Ram Nath Kovind was today elected as the 14th President of India. Kovind scored a comfortable victory over his rival Meira Kumar. He won with a margin of 65.65 per cent of the votes. Meira won 34.35 per cent of the votes.
Ram Nath Kovind was the Governor of Bihar before he was selected by the BJP for the presidential race.
