Is it a record? Just one candidate with criminal background in Manipur polls 2017

The charge against him is related to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.

This could be a record of sorts. Just one candidate out of the 98 contesting in the second phase of the Manipur assembly elections 2017 has declared a pending criminal case against him. A report by the Association for Democratic Reforms says that it has analysed the sworn affidavits of 98 candidates.

The only candidate to declare a pending criminal case against him is Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh. The charge against him is related to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. He is contesting on a BJP ticket from the Kakching constituency.

However, in the crorepati category, there are 29 names. The Indian National Congress has 8, BJP 1, NPP, 5, NPF, 1, MND, 2 and 9 independents. The average assets per candidate is Rs 1.33 crore. The richest candidate is Alfred S Arthur of the Congress with assets of Rs 36 crore.

There are no zero assets candidates in the fray. The candidate with the lowest assets is Kameiwilliam Kabui of the AITC. He has declared assets worth Rs 13,000. A total of 11 candidates have not declared their PAN details.
