After her humiliating defeat in the Manipur assembly polls, rights activist Irom Sharmila had announced her decision to never fight polls. The 44-year-old will reach a village in Kerala on Tuesday where she is expected to spend at least a month. Irom Sharmila announced her retirement from politics after her very first attempt at electoral politics.

Sharmila will reach Bengaluru on Monday evening and proceed to Attappadi, a tribal village in Kerala where she will stay at the Santhi Medical information centre. The institution is promoted by Uma Preman, a social worker. It is understood that the month-long quiet retreat was the activist's choice after she received less than 100 votes in the recently concluded Manipur assembly polls.

Irom Sharmila managed to get just 90 votes compared to Okram Ibobi Singh's 18,649 votes. She had contested the elections under the banner of the People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance. She has vowed to fight against the AFSPA.
