New Delhi, Jan 22: After Bollywood actors Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, now, Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has also joined the intolerance debate.

When Karan Johar was asked about why he did not join this debate, the filmmaker sparked a controversy by saying that freedom of expression in India "is the biggest joke". He further went on to say that "revealing in today's time can land you in jail".

Know why Karan Johar sparked controversy.
"It is a tough country to speak about your personal life. I feel very sad about it," he added.

According to a IBNlive report, "The filmmaker further said that being a public figure, he is "expected to kind of helm a certain movement, talk about freedom of expression, which is the biggest joke in the world," adding, "I am a filmmaker and I don't even have freedom of expression."

Recently, Aamir Khan landed into the controversy when while talking about 'intolerance' he said, "Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India?"

"That's a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet," he added.

However, Aamir later clarified his statement saying, "Neither I, nor my wife Kiran, have any intention of leaving the country. We never did, and nor would we like to in the future. Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. India is my country, I love it, I feel fortunate for being born here, and this is where I am staying."

Aamir Khan was not alone who faced criticism. Earlier Shahrukh Khan too faced stern criticism for his remark on "intolerance".
