Installation of cameras in court not meant to record proceedings: SC

The Supreme Court said that its order to install CCTV cameras in the courtrooms and tribunals was not meant to record proceedings. The order was passed so that concerns regarding safety and administration of justice could be addressed a Bench comprising Justices Adarsh Goel and U U Lalit said.

The court said that whether the terminal of the CCTV cameras may be available with an oversight committee could be considered by the High Courts and Central Government.

A Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra is hearing a separate plea by senior advocate Indira Jaising in which live streaming of court proceedings was sought.

Siddharth Luthra, the amicus curiae in the case said that the live streaming of proceedings may require certain safeguards especially when it comes to cases relating to sexual assaults, protected witnesses in sensitive cases juvenile and family cases.

The court said installation of CCTV cameras can also be considered in state tribunals and quasi-judicial authorities, including the Executive Magistrate and Revenue Courts.
