According to Navy Spokesperson, Exercise RIMPAC is the largest multilateral naval exercise in the world and is held biennially in the Western Pacific Ocean.

During the years 2006, 2010 and 2012, Indian Navy participated in the Exercise as an 'Observer' and in 2014 INS Sahyadri was deployed, enhancing the presence.

Navy terms the participation in the Exercise as a significant milestone in its efforts towards, strengthening mutual confidence and inter-operability, as well as sharing of best practices with other navies of the region.
