Incidentally, out of the 120 who lost their lives, only 60 could be identified, most of whom hailed from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The rest were beyond recognition. 40 of the injured were admitted to various hospitals in Kanpur.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and Minister of Railways Manoj Sinha were the first to reach the spot. Supervising the rescue operations, Prabhu assured "strictest possible action" against the guilty. The cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained, but experts believe that it could have been caused by a fracture in the tracks.
