India records 1,68,912 fresh COVID-19 cases in a new 1-day high


New Delhi, Apr 12: India added 1,68,912 fresh Covid-19 infections, breaking all records, ever since the coronavirus pandemic began last year. As many as 904 new deaths were reported, taking the number of fatalities to 1,70,179.

India's tally of more than 1.35 crore Covid cases is the second-highest globally, behind the United States and just ahead of Brazil's.

The active cases have surpassed the 12-lakh mark, while the national Covid recovery rate has fallen below 90 per cent.

Registering a steady increase for the 33rd day in row, the active cases have increased to 12,01,009 comprising 8.88 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 89.86 per cent.

The active caseload was at its lowest at 1,35,926 on February 12 and it was at its highest at 10,17,754 on September 18, 2020.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,21,56,529, while the case fatality rate has further dropped to 1.26 per cent.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state with 63,294 new cases and 349 deaths in the last 24 hours. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray is likely to take a call on announcing a complete lockdown in the state this week.

Delhi also witnessed the highest single-day spike with 10,774 new COVID-19 cases and 48 deaths reported.

According to the ICMR, 25,78,06,986 samples have been tested up to April 11 with 11,80,136 samples being tested on Sunday.

The overall global Covid-19 caseload has topped 135.8 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.93 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
