India informs Portugal about Salem’s conviction in Mumbai blasts case
The Portugal government has been informed about the sentence awarded to Abu Salem in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. The Ministry for Home Affairs while passing on the information to Portugal has attached a copy of the verdict.
It may be recalled that Salem was deported from Portugal in 2005. The decision to inform Portugal was taken as per the requirement in the treaty. Officials said that the details of the judgment and the basis on which Salem was convicted was informed to Portugal.
Salem has claimed in a petition before the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) that the sentence is violative of the extradition terms and that he be returned to Portugal. Salem's contention is that he cannot be imprisoned for more than 25 years.
