IITs and other institutions should close courses if there are few takers
The HRD ministry seeks to close down the branches and courses which have got few applicants and in turn make capacity for the new courses after analysing the market opportunity.
The Central government on Thursday has asked technical institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology to shut courses that are getting few takers in the past three years.
In response to a written question in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for HRD Mahendra Nath Pandey said that all the centrally-funded institutions, which are participating in joint counseling sessions have been asked to review the position of vacant seats and to revise the number of seats in each discipline after considering employment opportunities, national requirements, available infrastructure and scope for future.
He further said that the new courses and disciplines may be introduced only after analysing market opportunity, employability and requirement of higher education/research/entrepreneurship.
