Ragging: IIT Kanpur suspends 22 students

The students will be able to resume their studies only after they complete the suspension period. However, IIT-Kanpur has not filed any police complaint against the 22 students for ragging their juniors as that would have jeopardised their future prospects.

The accused students have been asked to vacate their hostel rooms and leave the campus.

Earlier on August 20, about 30 junior students filed a complaint to the dean of student affairs against 50 seniors, saying they were thrashed, abused, and forced to do inhuman acts.

Ragging is outlawed in Indian campuses but despite interventions from the government and the Supreme Court, fresh college entrants are often subject to days of physical and mental abuse by their seniors - a practice often dubbed as entertainment or fun.
