Hurricane Irma: MEA in touch with Indian diaspora

The ministry's spokesman Raveesh Kumar said the Indian missions in the four countries were in touch with local government officials to provide assistance to the affected Indians.

With Hurricane Irma wreaking havoc in the US, the Caribbean islands and nearby areas, the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday said it was monitoring the situation and communicating with the Indian diaspora in the region.

The ministry's spokesman Raveesh Kumar said the Indian missions in the four countries were in touch with local government officials to provide assistance to the affected Indians.

The MEA also released emergency contact numbers for those stranded due to the Hurricane.

Over ten people were killed and seven others missing after Hurricane Irma pounded the Caribbean islands, shredding homes before moving towards the United States where up to a million people were ordered to flee.

In the wake of hurricane Harvey wreaking havoc and as Irma is on the rampage, US President Donald Trump has signed a USD 15 billion hurricane relief package passed by Congress.
