Bengaluru, Oct 27: In the month of August 2015, the Intelligence Bureau picked up crucial intercepts which suggested that there were some men within the Pakistan mission who were running a spy ring. At that time, the police had arrested five people including a non-commissioned officer of the Air Force.

This case of 2015 was just a tip of the iceberg and since then the IB has kept a very close watch on the activities of each one in the Pakistan mission. On Thursday, Mehmood Akthar, a staffer in the Pakistan High Commission was detained and later released due to diplomatic immunity.

Following his questioning, two others-Subhash Jahangir and Maulana Ramzan were arrested from Rajasthan on the allegation that they had passed on crucial information on defence strategy to Akthar.

Akthar was planted into the Pakistan mission in New Delhi by the ISI. He was a hawaldar in the Baloch regiment of the Pakistan army. He was roped in by the ISI and sent to India. At the time of his detention, he was working in the visa department of the Pakistan mission.

The Intelligence Bureau kept a close watch on Akthar. Following the Uri attack and the surgical strikes that took place on September 29, there was hectic activity along the border.

It became clear that for the last 15 days Akthar was in touch with a group of people who were closely associated with the 2015 module. He was regularly seeking out information from people living along the border areas. Most of his information came from his men in Rajasthan.

On being questioned, Akthar immediately told the Delhi Police that he was an Indian citizen. He also showed the Delhi police a fake Aadhar card. However, on further questioning he admitted to them about his activities.

Akhtar will be deported to Pakistan after he was declared persona non grata ( an unwelcome or unacceptable person) by the Indian Ministry for External Affairs.
