How does 'face recognition' feature work in Aadhaar? Here it is
Less than a week after announcing a new two-layer safety feature, the UIDAI has announced the face authentication service for Aadhaar ID from 1 July 2018.
According to a tweet by UIDAI CEO Ajay Bhushan Pandey, the service has been introduced to 'help elderly or others facing issues with fingerprint authentication.'
Here's how the new security feature works:
So, the new security features that is facial authentication allows only in 'fusion mode' which means to successfully authorise an Aadhaar number holder, face authentication will be needed along with one more authentication - either fingerprint, iris or OTP.
Currently, only two types of authentication is required- fingerprint-based and iris-based.
One condition of the new facial recognition system is that it has to be used in conjunction with another authentication method, like fingerprint, iris or OTP.
Advantages of face authentication:
Face authentication will provide additional choice to create inclusive authentication for residents having difficulty with their fingerprints/iris authentication
However, UIDAI has mentioned that it will reveal necessary implementation details by 1 March 2018.
