Bengaluru, Nov 23: Has the Karnataka government underplayed the presence of Bangladeshis staying illegally in the state. The BJP claims the figure is 748 while the government maintains it is 283.
A war of words erupted between the two parties in Karnataka over the statistics put out by the government.
According to the government, a total of 283 irregular Bangladeshis are in the state. They include 16 in Mandya, one in Dakshina Kannada, three in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), 11 in Ramanagara, 13 in Mysuru district, one in Chikkamagaluru, 14 in Bengaluru district, 25 in Mysuru urban, 197 in Bengaluru urban and two in Shivamogga.
The government furthers goes on to add that 52 had been deported. Further the government states that 25 cases had been registered in which these Bangladeshis were involved in some kind of offence.
The real problem:
These are official statistics and are based on known cases. The bigger problem is with those unknown cases. If one were to go through an Intelligence Bureau dossier specific to this issue, it is clear that most Bangladeshis who illegally infiltrate are provided identification cards at the entry point itself.
Many are posing as residents of either Assam or West Bengal. It is very hard to tell the difference the IB dossier notes.
Identification cards are provided on the condition that they return to either Assam and West Bengal at the time of the election and vote for the party which the tout has instructed them to do.
The figures could be higher than what the Karnataka government is quoting says an Intelligence Bureau official. The police should not believe the immigrants based on the identification cards they are showing.
There needs to be through investigation to differentiate between the real India and the irregular Bangladeshi, the officer further notes.
