Video: Make-up artist Charu Khurana wins 6-year-old legal battle

Mumbai, April 21: Female make up artist Charu Khurana, who won the six-year-long legal battle against gender discrimination in the Indian film industry, last year in November 2014, has now became the first female member in all-men make-up artists body.

According to TOI report, Charu Khurana's name was on Monday, April 20, registered by Cine Costume Make-Up Artist & Hair Dressers' Association (CCMAA), to pursue her profession in Bollywood. [SC slams Bollywood for not encouraging women make-up artists]

Who is Charu Khurana?

32-year-old Make up artist Charu Khurana pursued her make-up course from Los Angeles and returned to Mumbai.

She has worked on the faces of top film actors and politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President Barack Obama.

Advocate Jyotika Kalra, who appeared for Charu said that CCMAA had even restricted her from last three years to take up any personal assignment.

In January this year, when the US President Barack Obama visited India to attend Republic Day celebrations, then CNN had hired Charu to apply make-up on Obama. In October last year, she did make-up for PM Narendra Modi.

Her clients include Cricketer Virat Kohli and other top film stars, like Abhishek Bachchan, with whom she worked in Ravaan in 2010.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor also congratulated the petitioner Charu Khurana, who challenged the gender bias in the CCMAA.

Charu could have enrolled herself as a make-up artist in 2009, if female artists were allowed.

While saying that the CCMAA behaved like an "emperor", the apex court on Monday, April 13 ordered it to register the name of Charu Khurana.

Holding that harassment of women in the 21st century is "inconceivable and impermissible", the apex court struck down the provision putting restriction on women make-up artists and hair dressers in the film industry.

It said that there is no "rationality' in such kind of discrimination and directed the Cine Costume and Make-up Artist Association (CCMAA) to delete the provisions within 10 days.

The court passed the order on a PIL filed by Charu Khurana and other women make-up artists who alleged that female artists are not allowed to be a member of the association and one cannot work in the industry without being registered with the association.
