Gurmehar Kaur is Time Magazines top 10 Next Gen leaders
Gurmehar Kaur is one of Time Magazine's 10 Next Generation Leaders for 2017. Time Magazine hailed her as a free speech warrior.
The 20-year-old from Jalandhar came under the limelight after she spoke against the violence by members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at Delhi University's Ramjas College in February this year. She was trolled and threatened with rape and murder.
ABVP supporters were protesting outside Ramjas College against an event that had Umar Khalid, a PhD scholar at Jawahalala Nehru University and student activist who was arrested on charged of sedition last year, as a speaker. The protest quickly turned violent.
"But still she refuses to be silenced, and has a memoir, Small Acts of Freedom, that is due to be published next year," Time Magazine wrote.
It may be recalled that Gurmehar the daughter of an Army officer who was killed in an encounter had held a placard saying that it was 'war, not Pakistan' that killed her father.
