GPS mandatory in public transport vehicles from 1st April

Initially the ministry had proposed mandatory installation of CCTV cameras in buses having more than 23 seats, the proposal was dropped due to privacy concerns.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made it mandatory to have Global Positioning System (GPS) devices passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses from From 1st April 2018. The mandatory step is being taken to ensure women safety.

GPS mandatory in public transport vehicles from 1st April

"From 1st April 2018, passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses are to be mandatorily equipped with GPS devices," the ministry tweeted on Wednesday.

"Three-wheelers have been kept out of these mandatory installations of GPS and alert button since they are open. Passengers are more vulnerable in vehicles with closed structure," Transport official told Times of India.
