The Allahabad High Court on Friday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to specify what caused the deaths of more than 60 children at the hospital. The next hearing is scheduled for August 29.

Hearing a bunch of PILs seeking a judicial probe into the tragedy, the bench of chief justice DB Bhosale and justice Yashwant Varma directed the state government to place before it relevant details of the committee - if any - constituted for the inquiry.

However, the bench refused to order the judicial inquiry for now stating that it cannot be done on the basis of mere apprehensions expressed by the petitioners.

On Wednesday, the central government team that visited the facility had also claimed that the deaths of 63 children were not caused by an oxygen supply shortage.

The state had earlier held that they had died of encephalitis, not lack of liquid oxygen supply at the facility.

Meanwhile, a fact-finding team of the Indian Medical Association has confirmed that Oxygen supply at Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Hospital was disrupted on the night of August 10, that led to the death of several children.

Social activist Nutan Thakur on Wednesday filed a PIL in the Allahabad High Court with regard to the death of over 60 children at a Gorakhpur hospital last week, seeking a judicial probe into the tragedy.

Her plea also sought strict implementation of an earlier high court order on a complete ban on private practice by government doctors.
