Indian Foreign Service officer Gopal Baglay will replace Vikas Swarup as the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Swarup was on February 16 appointed as the Indian high commissioner to Canada.

Baglay, a 1992 batch IFS officer, has earlier served as deputy high commissioner to Pakistan. He was also a press counsellor at the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, as well as director in the external publicity division of the ministry of external affairs.

Swarup, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1986, has served in various Indian diplomatic missions, including Turkey, the United States, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Japan.

He was appointed as MEA's spokesperson in 2015 replacing Syed Akbaruddin, who is now India's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.

Swarup would be replacing Vishnu Prakash, a former MEA spokesperson, as the ambassador to Canada.
