Good news: Drought-hit Latur gets rains; farmers elated

Latur, May 1: Drought-hit Latur in the Marathwada region of a Maharashtra had a reason to rejoice, as the parched region got drenched in rains in last two days.

According to reports, Latur that recently faced drought-condition and water scarcity, received rainfall on April 28 and April 29.

Water scarcity in dried Latur had gone to an extent, where trains were sent to provide gallons of water in the city.

But, light showers in Latur not only provided respite from the scorching heat but also raised a hope of good monsoon in coming days.

On April 27, Wednesday, Skymet had predicted that Latur may receive intermittent rainfall and it happened as per their prediction.

Officials from the Divisional Office were quoted saying as 5 mm to 10 mm of rain accompanied with hailstorm was insignificant and harmful for the crops in the parched parts of Latur, Beed and Nanded.

However, those light rains are not enough to quench the thirst of drought-hit region, but it did brought a smile and cheers on farmers and residents of the city.

Presently, ten districts of Marathwada region are reeling under severe drought conditions.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar visits Latur

Art of Living founder and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Saturday, April 30 visited Latur and announced that "The Art of Living will spend 105 crores on river rejuvenation in drought-hit Maharashtra."

"I inspected the Manjra River site in Latur, Maharashtra today. Excellent work being done by our volunteers!", he tweeted.
